NGO and charity committed to reducing injury in sport

Hoci Cymru (Hockey Wales) joins SportSmart, ensuring a focus on the safety and wellbeing of 7,000 youth and grassroots players

  • Tuesday 14 May – Hoci Cymru (Hockey Wales) is proud to announce a partnership with SportSmart, becoming the latest National Governing Body (NGB) to commit to the innovative injury management programme. With 67 clubs and over 7,000 players falling under the Hockey Wales umbrella, this collaboration will provide comprehensive support for the wellbeing of youth and grassroots players across the Welsh nation.

SportSmart, developed by Podium Analytics, has revolutionised injury management, and has been designed to support the on-the-ground needs of sports coaches. The tool enables coaches and support staff to monitor and manage the welfare of each participant, ensuring a holistic approach to player development.

Hockey Wales is the 11th NGB to join the SportSmart programme, in addition to the many schools and clubs that are currently utilising the programme, highlighting its effectiveness in promoting safe and sustainable participation in sport.

Commenting on the partnership, Paul Whapham, Chief Executive, Hockey Wales, stated: "We are thrilled to be partnering with SportSmart to enhance the safety and wellbeing of all our athletes. SportSmart will provide invaluable insights and resource to our clubs and ensure a proactive approach to injury prevention and management. We are committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment for our players, and this collaboration is a significant step towards achieving that goal."

Stephen Jones, Chief Operating Officer at SportSmart, expressed his enthusiasm for Hockey Wales joining the SportSmart programme: "We are delighted to welcome Hockey Wales as our latest NGB to SportSmart. Their commitment to player welfare aligns perfectly with our mission to provide an environment of more sport and less injury. Together, we will continue to drive innovation in sport and empower players to reach their full potential."

The partnership between Hockey Wales and SportSmart is set to make a positive impact on the hockey community in Wales, ensuring that every hockey player has access to the best injury management practices and support. As the programme expands, more athletes, clubs, and organisations are expected to join, contributing to a safer and more sustainable sporting landscape.
