How AI is shaping sport

  • AI is a hot topic. Everyone is talking about it but what do we really know, and do we really understand?

In sport, the potential of AI is enormous. Data is insight and a driver of success. Being able to digest even more from the data at hand by means of AI is tempting. But sport is about people. It's about connections, and it's about nurturing talent. How does AI fit into this? How can it be used sensibly?

  • In early September, guests from across sport joined Pinsent Masons and Podium Analytics for an afternoon of thought leadership and topical insights, where our speakers drew upon personal experience and unparalleled expertise across social, ethics, legal and governance, technology and science, to tackle the urging questions.

We welcomed Sir Ron Dennis CBE, Founder and Chairman of Podium Analytics, who shared his experience of harnessing the power of data and technology to drive innovation in sport, Dr. Nils Rauer, MJI, Partner at Pinsent Masons, who set the scene in terms of the emerging legal and regulatory framework, and Damian Smith, CTO at Podium Analytics, on the topic of technological innovation.

Prof. Nick Peirce MBE, Chief Medical Officer, England & Wales Cricket Board, and Chrissie Wellington OBE, four-time Ironman Triathlon Champion and former Global Head of Health and Wellbeing for parkrun, joined us for a deep-dive discussion about the potential applications and challenges of AI in sport, facilitated by Trevor Watkins, Global Head of Sport and Entertainment at Pinsent Masons.

  • “It was great to engage with experts in the area of AI and to dig a bit deeper into the legal implications. At the ECB, we have tons of data. Understanding how to use it safely, how we can put resource behind supporting good use of it and how it can help performance, sustainable careers and injury prevention are all super important factors to consider. The power of processing and the ability to now analyse all this data is hugely exciting but there is also some trepidation about the potential pitfalls.”
